World bicycle day

This day was introduced by the UN in 2018 to recognize the unique importance, durability and versatility of the bicycle, which represents a simple, cheap, reliable and sustainable means of transport.

The bicycle promotes environmental conservation and health, stimulates creativity and social commitment, providing users with immediate awareness of their surroundings. Furthermore, the bicycle is considered a development tool, not only for transport, but also for access to education, health and sport.

The resolution emphasizes that the bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transport and promotes sustainable consumption and production, with a positive impact on the climate. The UN encourages Member States to pay particular attention to the bicycle in their development plans and to include it in international, regional, national and local development policies. Furthermore, road safety is called for to be improved and integrated into sustainable transport and mobility planning, actively protecting pedestrian safety and cycling, with particular attention to health effects.
