Stability equals speed
The deep section front rims are negatively affected by side winds. This negatively affects handling, in turn causing the rider to slow down. Using the first modeling algorithm designed based on real cyclist reaction times and validated by road tests, a front rim has been developed that reduces aerodynamic drag and increases stability by 25% in case of sudden gusts of wind compared to previous 50 mm rims.
Two circles, one goal
To build the fastest wheels possible for the dynamics encountered in real-world conditions, Roval developed distinctly different shapes for the front and rear rims of the Rapide CLX II. The result is a wheelset that catches less drag than most 65mm wheelsets and brings a clear 25% improvement in stability over 50mm rims in gusty conditions, all at a lower weight to that of many climbing wheels. Mission accomplished.
The reduction in rolling resistance of a tubeless setup is undeniable, as are the benefits of improved handling and incredible puncture protection. The development of the Rapide CLX II involved the most rigorous and extensive design and testing program ever undertaken and resulted in a wheel that nearly doubles current industry impact standards, while still achieving the lightest weight possible. The Rapide CLX II uses a hooked rim (allowing true pedal pressures up to 110psi) for secure tire bead retention and an easier mounting experience than ever. This is tubeless done right.
Goodbye to aerodynamic drag
The rear wheel is the last thing that encounters the wind, so the rim shape was developed to minimize resistance to the bike's forward motion. With a depth of 60mm and an external width of 30mm, the Rapide CLX rear rim reduces turbulence and produces the greatest aerodynamic benefits. Since the rear wheel does not affect steering like the front, this deep section does not negatively affect handling. Together, they represent the fastest package for real-world racing conditions.
AeroFlange hubs are aerodynamically optimized, with wide bracing angles for increased strength and reduced spoke weight. Plus, they benefit from the reduced weight and increased strength of SINC ceramic bearings and the legendary durability of DT Swiss EXP freehub internals. The design of the hub and the optimization of the number of spokes allows us to position the rim reinforcement exactly where it is needed, at the spoke nipples, and to drill the spoke holes exactly at the angle of intersection with the rim. Weight is kept to a minimum and strength is optimised.
