The Castelli Free Protect Race bib was initially made in response to a specific request from Chris Froome to protect him during the first dangerous stages of the Tour de France. He wanted something to reduce tarmac abrasions in the event of a fall in those hamlets where everyone wants to be in front and falls are frequent.
Castelli has thus returned to the old trick, familiar to athletes who run on the track, of wearing two pairs of shorts, knowing that the Lycra® that slides over the Lycra® is the best way to prevent or reduce the abrasion from asphalt on your hips. In this case, the Vortex fabric of the Free Bibshort was used on the outside, which is already very resistant both when sliding along the road surface but also for dog bites (yes, really!). Then, an inner layer of stretch fabric made by Dyneema® was added to reinforce the shorts, the same miraculous yarn used in rock climbing ropes or as reinforcement in America's Cup sails and bulletproof vests. This will help prevent the inner fabric from tearing in many cases. This double layer fabric has been inserted over the side panel, which gives plenty of protection for the hips and thighs in the event of a fall.
In addition to the protective aspect, this cycling short has been built using the components and structure of the Free Aero Race 4 Bibshort, Castelli's top-of-the-range short that also guarantees remarkable comfort.
